About the Artist:
Originally from Switzerland, Verena Levine has lived in the United States for more than 30 years. For the past nine years she has resided in Washington, DC. Verena is a well known quilt artist and the subject of many articles in quilt magazines in the U.S. and France. She used to make mostly pieced quilts, but during the past ten years she has made only pictorial appliqued quilts, obtaining ideas from her surroundings. Verena has exhibited at the prestigious Smithsonian and Philadelphia Museum of Art crafts shows.
These brilliant pieces of American folk art have been purchased for corporate and private collections in the USA and abroad. Major commissioned installations may be seen locally at the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, Williams and Connolly P.A., and the Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Company (Washington, D.C.), the University of Virginia School of Nursing (Charlottesville, Va.), and the Union Memorial Hospital (Baltimore, Md.).
Verena likes the effect achieved by the juxtaposition of many different prints and she uses the design and texture of the fabric to its best advantage. Her facility with the scissors is extraordinary, conveying lifelike and often whimsical images of people and animals in urban and rural settings.
